TECHIE GIRL: Understanding the Grind

The webinar started with introductions. The introductions were done individually mentioning things about oneself, the tech track one is into and what one is currently doing. There were lots of interesting contributions from both beginners and experts.

Thereafter, the first speaker, Ms. Heritage, was invited to speak by the moderator to address the topic Finding your way in tech as a female”. Heritage started by introducing herself, mentioning the tech track she is into, and she is currently the lead for She Code Africa University of Lagos (SCAunilag). Heritage explained the need for women to join tech as the ratio of women in tech to men in tech is about 30 to 50.

She revealed that there are a lot of online jobs and emphasized on the need for female role models. She went on to explain how to get started in tech, stating that it is important to have a road map, stay focused, reach out to people for help, ask google a lot of questions and finally, network with people of like mind. She further shed light on the topic “Finding your path in tech” explaining highlights such as impostor syndrome, being open and free to get help and joining communities such as She Code Africa.

The next speaker, Mr. Nnamdi, spoke briefly about his road-map and also gave insights on how to stay focused on the journey of getting techie. The last speaker, Ms. Jennifer, talked about "Natural Language Processing(NLP)". She explained the meaning of NLP, the types of NLP one can get started in, the programming language that best suit NLP not disputing other programming languages, the techniques used in understanding context and semantics in NLP, and cited examples with real-world use cases such as google translate, Grammarly etc.

The question and answer sessions, after each speaker finished her presentation, were met with enthusiasm and high participation and were also characterized by curiosity from the listeners.
